Forecast maps show the expected path of Post-Tropical Cyclone Arthur after the system became the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season on Wednesday.

The system briefly strengthened to become a tropical storm on Wednesday but had been downgraded to post-tropical cyclone status by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) by Wednesday night.

In a public advisory issued late Wednesday, the NHC said Arthur had degenerated but cautioned that life-threatening flooding could continue for parts of the southeastern U.S., with its remnants expected to cross the region Thursday through Friday.

The system was forecast to weaken further as it moves inland, although it could still bring widespread heavy rain in the coming days.

AccuWeather's forecast map depicts the system's expected path through Friday.

The agency expects rainfall totals of five to 10 inches, with isolated areas potentially receiving close to 20 inches, stretching from the Mid and Upper Texas coast east-northeastward into southern and central Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, as well as parts of western Georgia and the Florida Panhandle through early Friday.

In a Wednesday email to Newsweek, AccuWeather forecasters said the zone of greatest risk for rainfall would shift eastward from far eastern Texas and Louisiana Wednesday, to Georgia by Friday.

The outlet reported Wednesday that then-Tropical Storm Arthur made landfall along the Texas coast and was bringing significant flooding to the Gulf Coast.

Arthur developed from a broad swath of showers and thunderstorms over Texas that moved across the warm Gulf waters, allowing it to consolidate and intensify. The system’s center later advanced inland along the Texas coastline, it said.

AccuWeather added that drivers were caught off guard on roads north of Houston as downpours triggered a flash flood warning in the area. It also reported that a section of Interstate 10 near Houston was closed Wednesday morning as a result of high water, though the roadway was cleared by the afternoon.

According to a forecast map from the outlet, the greatest risks to life and property from the system through Friday are expected in southern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama, though a wider impact zone spans from southeast Texas through to the Carolinas.
