After trying — and failing — to challenge the NCAA over his eligibility after admitting to gambling on his own team, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby threw in the towel.
Sorsby was initially granted an injunction to keep his eligibility and play during the 2026 college football season, but the Big 12 took steps this week to block that and force Sorsby to sit out after violating the NCAA’s gambling policy.
Instead of trying to fight the NCAA in court, the 22-year-old QB decided to accept his fate and declare for the 2026 NFL supplemental draft.
The NFL has to agree to accept Sorsby into the supplemental draft, but many expect it will and there’s a good chance one team will take a risk on talented QB many scouts believe has first-round talent.
With Sorsby potentially available, Cincinnati’s Scott Satterfield, who coached Sorsby for the last two seasons with the Bearcats, has admitted teams are already doing their homework on the polarizing signal-caller.
“There certainly have been scouts, [general managers] have reached out and are just asking questions on a more personal level, probably more than the football level, with their interest, knowing that potentially something like this could happen,” Satterfield said, via 247Sports.
“I certainly think now that the news is out, over the next few weeks, there’s going to be a lot more inquiries about him, and trying to find more and more about him, and be able to take a chance to, if any of them take him.”

If Sorsby is selected, he’ll be the first player picked in the supplemental draft since the Arizona Cardinals took Washington State safety Jalen Thompson in the fifth round in 2019.
In the near 50-year history of the supplemental draft, just six quarterbacks have been taken — Dave Wilson (Round 1, New Orleans Saints), Bernie Kosar (Round 1, Cleveland Browns), Steve Walsh (Round 1, Dallas Cowboys), Timm Rosenbach (Round 1, Phoenix Cardinals), Dave Brown (Round 1, New York Giants), Terrelle Pryor (Round 3, Oakland Raiders).
Since 2000, 15 players have been taken in the supplemental draft:
- Milford Brown, G, sixth round, Houston Texans, 2002
- Tony Hollings, RB, second round, Houston Texans, 2003
- Manuel Wright, DT, fifth round, Miami Dolphins, 2005
- Ahmad Brooks, LB, third round, Cincinnati Bengals, 2006
- Paul Oliver, S, fourth round, San Diego Chargers, 2007
- Jared Gaither, OT, fifth round, Baltimore Ravens, 2007
- Jeremy Jarmon, DE, third round, Washington Redskins, 2009
- Harvey Unga, FB, Round 7, Chicago Bears, 2010
- Josh Brent, DT, Round 7, Dallas Cowboys, 2010
- Terrelle Pryor, QB, Round 3, Oakland Raiders, 2011
- Josh Gordon, WR, Round 2, Cleveland Browns, 2012
- Isaiah Battle, OT, Round 5, St. Louis Rams, 2015
- Sam Beal, CB, Round 3, New York Giants, 2018
