Keith Mitchell opened up his first round at the 2026 U.S. Open with a double bogey on the par-4 10th at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

The PGA Tour veteran carded four more bogeys on his opening nine, going into the turn at 6-over. However, it was a tale of two nines for Mitchell.

Mitchell fired off a birdie on the opening hole, beginning a stretch that would see him go 5-under through five holes. He finished the day with another birdie on the par-4 9th — shooting a 29 on the first nine.

The only other player to record a 29 in a U.S. Open appearance at Shinnecock was Neal Lancaster, who accomplished the feat on the back nine in 1995.

Mitchell is just the seventh player in overall U.S. Open history to card a 29.

"Making his 15th major championship start, Keith Mitchell posts a first-round 70 at the U.S. Open. After opening with a 6-over 41 on Nos. 10-18, he closed with a 6-under 29 on his back nine to equal his best 9-hole score in 231 starts on the PGA TOUR. The only other player with a 29 in a U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills: Neal Lancaster (1995/R4/back nine)," the PGA Tour wrote on X.
