The Philadelphia Eagles have worked feverishly to bolster their pass-rush this offseason, and fortunately for them they did.
Just days after signing former Buffalo Bills edge-rusher A.J. Epenesa, the Eagles lost another pass-rusher, surprisingly, to retirement.
“The #Eagles placed DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka on the reserve/retired list today,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo posted on X. “The #Buccaneers’ first-round pick in 2021 hadn’t been on the field for the #Eagles recently. The team added veteran edge A.J. Epenesa in the meantime. Tryon-Shonyinka steps away from the NFL at age 27.”
According to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team, Tryon-Shoyinka is the fourth veteran player to retire very shortly after signing with the Eagles, joining defensive end Za'Darius Smith (2025), wide receiver Devante Parker (2024), and linebacker Myles Jack (2023).

Tryon-Shoyinka’s retirement comes as a bit of a shock considering many expected him to be a focal point of the Eagles’ pass-rush next season after losing Jaelan Phillips, Nakobe Dean, and Brandon Graham.
The 32nd overall pick in the 201 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tryon-Shoyinka signed a one-year contract with the Eagles back in March. Prior to that, he played four seasons with the Bucs followed by parts of the 2025 season with the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears.
He totaled 160 tackles, 143 pressures, 100 hurries, 26 QB hits, 15 sacks, eight passes defended, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery, per Pro Football Focus.
With Tryon-Shoyinka out of the picture, Philadelphia’s pass-rush consists of Epenesa, Jonathan Greenard, Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, and Arnold Ebiketie, plus defensive tackles Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, and Jordan Davis.
