Two things can be true.

First: Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best soccer players in history. He is a marvel that has electrified our screens for the past two decades, scoring like a machine across Europe and now Saudi Arabia.

Second: He might be holding back Portugal's quest for a World Cup.

On Wednesday, following a night that saw his eternal rival Lionel Messi score a hat trick against Algeria, Ronaldo did his best to get on the scoresheet but didn't get close to putting a ball in the back of the net.

It was an awkward moment late on in the game, when Roberto Martínez decided to sub out Vitinha, their 26-year-old rock in the midfield, while keeping Ronaldo, 41, on the field with no threat to be seen.

Portugal was expected to win comfortably against DR Congo and did anything but, with the African nation putting on more positive attacking play than the World Cup favorites at points in what ended up being a 1-1 draw. Overall, Congo created more dangerous chances than Portugal on the day, leading them in expected goals.

It was that bad for Portugal.

While Ronaldo was mostly ineffective on the day, the entire team has to share the brunt of the blame as well, with the entire team looking toothless outside of their header goal in the opening minutes of the contest. They completed over 700 passes with a 92% accuracy rate, but who cares if almost none of them had any plan of attack behind them?

In a game of keep away, Portugal might be ready to compete for the World Cup.

But in a tournament where teams are playing with a ruthlessness behind them and superstars are living up to their name, Portugal need a fix and a fix fast.

And I don't know if Ronaldo is part of that fix.
