New York City descended into chaotic scenes as celebrations erupted after the Knicks clinched the NBA championship.
The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94 to 90 on Saturday evening, taking the series 4-1 and securing their first title since 1973. Politicians were quick to praise the team, with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posting “History” on X, and Governor Kathy Hochul writing that the team “made all New Yorkers so proud.”

Following the game, which was played in San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center, large crowds have flooded the streets of New York City to celebrate the win.
Footage and images circulating online shows fans climbing onto a convoy of school buses along Times Square, with some damaging the vehicles and attempting to flip them over. One bus was set on fire after burning clothing was thrown inside, per the New York Post, and can be seen ablaze as the celebrations continue.
According to several police scanner feeds, police called in a suspected shooting, though others have suggested this could have been a response to fireworks being set off near Times Square. The New York City Police Department has not yet confirmed a shooting to Newsweek.
This is a breaking story. More to come.
