A massive NBA Finals Game 5 arrives in San Antonio on Saturday, with one team looking to win the NBA championship, and the other attempting to stave off elimination.

The New York Knicks currently hold a 3-1 lead on the San Antonio Spurs, following an epic comeback from down 29 points to one-point winners in Game 4.

Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby fueled the comeback and win behind their combined 69 points, which included Brunson's baskets down the stretch and Anunoby's huge tip-in to take the lead with 1.2 seconds remaining.

That sets up what could be a disappointing night for the Spurs, and a thrilling night for the Knicks, except for the arrival of one referee trending on X as "The Extender."

NBA official Scott Foster at NBA Finals game

The NBA announced its officiating crew for Game 5, with veteran referee Scott Foster as the crew chief. He's nicknamed "The Extender" by many people due to playoff series getting extended when he's officiating a must-win game.

Joining Foster for tonight's crew will be James Caper and Tyler Ford, with Mitchell Ervin as an alternate.

While Foster is known for extending playoff series, there's another intriguing stat. According to Action Network's tweet, the Knicks are 10-0 against the spread in their last 10 games he officiated. Interestingly enough, one of them arrived in this series.

According to Tom Haberstroh, Foster last worked an NBA Finals elimination game in 2021. That was Game 6 when the Milwaukee Bucks clinched the NBA championship against the Phoenix Suns.

Foster worked in Game 1 of this year's NBA Finals, which the Knicks won, 105-95. Personal fouls were even at 23 per team, and the Knicks had seven fewer free throw attempts than the Spurs. Fouls and free throws are typically a discrepancy, and Knicks coach Mike Brown called that out after his team's Game 3 loss at Madison Square Garden.

The personal fouls were even at 21 per team in Game 4, with the Knicks receiving 28 free throws compared to 20 for the visiting Spurs. Brunson took eleven of his team's free throws, while the Spurs' Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama had a combined 15 free throws.

With Foster officiating tonight's game in San Antonio, it should be interesting to see if this series gets extended one more game, or if the Knicks can overcome "The Extender."

The Spurs are in a must-win situation already, so their backs are against the wall in front of their home crowd, and the Knicks would merely need to not lose by six points or more to extend their ATS streak to 11-0 against Foster.

Game 5 between the Knicks and Spurs is at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday on ABC and ESPN.
