Lionel Messi turns 39 in a little over a week, so what did the legend who has everything ask for as a present?

Apparently a hat trick and a share of a historic record.

Messi came into today's game behind France's Kylian Mbappé in the all-time World Cup goals leaderboard, following the Real Madrid star's brace against Senegal earlier in the day.

Messi followed up the brace from the man he defeated in the most legendary World Cup Final in history four years ago by surpassing him once again at the prestigious tournament, scoring three goals of his own against Algeria to start the tournament off right for the reigning and defending champions.

Did he break the record for most goals at the World Cup, though?

Well, he's tied.

Germany's Miroslav Klose had the record at 16, securing it at the 2014 World Cup, where he scored in the semifinals before defeating Messi and Argentina in the final.

12 years later, Messi has now tied Klose, effectively turning the rest of this World Cup into a race between him and Mbappé with the belief they still have a lot more goals to score this summer in North America.

Messi could break the record with his 17th goal next Monday against Austria, two days before his 39th birthday.
