Heading into this season, fantasy football managers were brimming with optimism over the Chargers.
With evil genius Mike McDaniel taking over as offensive coordinator, expectations were sky-high for a high-powered attack. Fantasy managers aggressively targeted quarterback Justin Herbert, paired him with explosive running back Omarion Hampton, and bet on dynamic wideout Ladd McConkey alongside tight end Oronde Gadsden II.
Unfortunately, reality has hit hard. The Chargers have limped out of the gate to an agonizing 0-6 start, leaving fantasy rosters across the country reeling from underperforming draft picks, stagnant scoring and empty stat lines.
But what if they aren’t this bad? Marvel Comics spent decades captivating fans with its iconic “What If…?” series. Like the mind-bending, hypothetical storylines such as “What If Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben Had Lived?” and “What If Captain America Was Elected President?”, football fans also love to explore the possibilities of another road taken.
What if the Chargers come out of their bye week and completely change the script? What if the second half of the 2026 season belongs to Chargers fantasy assets?
Back in August, the draft capital and upside had managers ecstatic. Herbert was expected to thrive in McDaniel’s timing-based scheme. Hampton was drafted as a high-end fantasy back after flashing elite physical traits. McConkey was ticketed as the dominant target hog in the slot, and Gadsden was viewed as a vertical threat down the seam.
Instead, an overly complex scheme, execution lapses and script issues have suffocated production. Herbert’s yardage floor has dropped, Hampton’s efficiency has dipped while playing from behind, McConkey has fought through nagging injuries, and Gadsden has been trapped in a red-zone drought. Throw Quentin Johnston into the mix as well, whose big-play, athletic tools have gone underutilized during this slump.

If the Chargers are going to turn their season around, the upcoming schedule offers the ideal launchpad coming off their bye. Up next, the Chargers faces a three-game stretch against the Rams, Texans and Ravens.
None of these three defenses have lived up to their lofty preseason expectations, each showing significant vulnerability to pass rushes, explosive run plays, or seam routes. If McDaniel spent his week off recalibrating their heavy personnel packages and deep-shot timing, this defensive lineup presents a prime runway for a fantasy scoring explosion.

This is obviously just a hypothetical scenario, as a winless team does not transform into a juggernaut overnight without solving deep structural issues. However, if you believed in the talent, scheme and draft profile from earlier this year, those underlying reasons for optimism have not vanished.
You don’t have to run out and acquire every Chargers player on the market today, but the probability of such quality talents turning their seasons around is certainly greater than zero. Keep a close eye on the waiver wire and throw out a few low-ball trade offers because you might just secure a league-winning stack for the second-half stretch run.
