A large and “extremely dangerous” tornado has been confirmed on the ground in central Illinois, prompting urgent warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS) and officials to seek immediate shelter.
The tornado was located near Washburn, about 7 miles east of Chillicothe, at around 5:01 p.m. CDT on Thursday and was moving northeast at 45 mph, according to the NWS office in Lincoln. A tornado warning remains in effect until 5:45 p.m. CDT for Marshall and north-central Woodford counties.
Weather authorities described the situation as a “particularly dangerous” event, warning that residents in the storm’s path face a life-threatening risk. The tornado was confirmed by trained weather spotters.
Communities including Washburn, Varna, Toluca and Wenona are directly in the projected path, with other nearby areas such as La Rose, Low Point and Lake Wildwood also at risk.
The NWS warned that flying debris could be deadly, especially for those without shelter, and said mobile homes are likely to be destroyed. Significant structural damage is expected, with complete destruction possible.
Officials urged residents to take cover immediately in basements or interior rooms on the lowest floor of sturdy buildings, away from windows.
