Earlier this offseason quarterback Baker Mayfield made it known he wants a new contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Just last week he said that he and the Bucs are "not anywhere close to what we were thinking" regarding a new deal heading into the 2026 season, the final year of his three-year deal worth $100 million. He previously said that if he doesn't have a new deal before training camp, he would shut down negotiations to focus on football.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles told reporters he wants to see Mayfield with the team long term and suggested the contract talks would "take care of itself."

"Baker's all business. He's all about business," Bowles said. "The contract stuff takes care of itself. That's the business side of it that you don't see, that everybody has to deal with, and I'm sure he'll take care of it, but it doesn't affect his play."

Mayfield took a slight step back from his 2024 season when he finished 11th in the NFL MVP voting by throwing for 3,693 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The team was plagued by injuries at the wide receiver position, which also helps explain his dip in production.

"Baker's a true pro," Bowles said. "I don't think there's any disappointment whatsoever. I mean, he loves it here. We love him here. The contract stuff takes care of itself, whether it's the quarterback or any other position that comes up -- those things get worked out over time. You just concentrate on what we got to concentrate on, on the field, and he's been great right there."

Tampa Bay opens the season on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 13.
