The Edmonton Oilers just seem to keep digging themselves into a bigger hole.

The team was already taking heat from its fan base for pushing forward with the goal to hire the controversial Mike Babcock as the team’s next head coach.

Now, the Oilers are waiting to hear back results from the NHL’s investigation into Babcock, who resigned as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets back in 2023 amid allegations of inappropriate behavior stemming from asking players to look through their phones.

But according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, that investigation could get a lot uglier after new information has come to light.

“If #Oilers elect to continue down the path with Mike Babcock, sources say the #NHLPA is in receipt of ‘significant’ additional claims from their own investigation with players that were not publicly reported in 2023,” Seravalli wrote on X. “Those claims were presented to #NHL prior to his resignation.”

“Furthermore, sources indicate that asking players to see photos is NOT what ultimately resulted in Babcock’s resignation,” he added in a follow-up tweet. “It was the subsequent (unknown) allegation that cost Babcock his job in #CBJ.”

Mike Babcock is under investigation by the NHL

TSN’s Darren Dreger reported there is no timeline for the investigation, which will include speaking with multiple Blue Jackets players who were involved in the previous allegations against Babcock.

If Babcock were to back out of the deal with Edmonton, multiple reports indicate the NHL would drop its investigation like it did after he resigned three years ago.

In addition to demanding players allow him to look through their phones, Babcock has been in trouble several times before for questionable behavior.

He was also accused of bullying former Detroit Red Wings player Johan Franzen into having a nervous breakdown, asking former Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner to rank his former teammates based on their effort level, and healthy scratching players like Mike Modano and Mike Commodore due to a personal vendettas.

Oilers fans have made it clear they don’t want Babcock around, but the team still plans to move ahead with the hire anyway.
