Looks like Carter (Finn Little) is officially in his difficult teenager era! After witnessing the death of his friend Dwight White (Ray McKinnon) at the hands of Sheriff Wade (Josh Stewart), Carter is naturally shaken. If that wasn’t enough reason to be ornery, Carter also feels betrayed by his adopted parents, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), after they intentionally shielded him from witnessing the extermination of their herd due to a hoof and mouth disease outbreak. No wonder the only person he finds solace in is his new girlfriend, Oreana Jackson (Natalie Alyn Lind), who has issues of her own to deal with.

In this exclusive clip from this week’s Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip attempt to have a conversation with a sullen Carter during breakfast. “I’ll be home late tonight,” says Beth as she pours Carter a glass of orange juice. “Me too,” says Carter as he shoves some egg into his mouth. Rip and Beth shoot each other a look. “You seeing Oreana?” asks Beth carefully.

“She wants to go fishing and then maybe grab dinner after school,” replies Carter, now pushing food around his plate. “Nice,” says Beth, prompting Rip with her eyes to chime in. “You know how to fish?” asks Rip, taking the hint. “Nah, I’m sure it won’t be that hard to learn,” says Carter simply.

“Just don’t be too late,” says Beth gently. “Yep,” sighs Carter, refusing to make eye contact with her. There’s an awkward silence before Beth speaks again. “You know, there has been a lot of change around here lately, but we’re going to get through it together… like a family.” Carter only stares down at his plate, clearly biting his tongue. Beth shoots Rip a look urging him to say something.

“Carter, is there something you want to talk about?” asks Rip. Carter hesitates for a moment, before standing up from his seat. “I got to get to class,” says Carter. “I’ve got a math quiz.” Before they can say anything, Carter grabs a piece of toast from his plate and heads out the door.
