The Canadian men's national team is making back-to-back men's FIFA World Cup appearances for the first time in its history — having ended a 36-year drought by qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — and Les Rouges picked a pretty good time to do it.

Canada, Mexico, and the United States are the host nations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicked off June 11, and Canada played its opening match against Bosnia-Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto on Friday afternoon.

Bosnia-Herzegovina jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a Jovo Lukic goal in the 21st minute, infusing the stadium with anxiety that yet another World Cup match would pass without the CanMNT notching a point.

Then, Cyle Larin happened.

Larin subbed on for striker Tani Oluwaseyi in the 76th minute, and two minutes later, he rocketed a shot from the top of the box that found the back of the net for the equalizer.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but it was the most electrifying draw you'll ever see, as CanMNT finally earned its first-ever point at a World Cup. Larin joins Alphonso Davies as the only two Canadian men to score at the World Cup.

"It was special for me," Larin said after the match, per FOX. "I was ready to come in and score and to help the team, to help the stadium, the fans, to get back with us. I think we had many chances, and I told them, 'The goals are gonna come.' [...] I score when Canada needs me, and I've always done that."

Previously, the Canadian men went 0-3 at the 1986 World Cup — failing to score in any of the three group stage matches — and 0-3 in the 2022 World Cup. So, they're already doing better than they've ever done, and we're only one match in.

Canada will look for more when it faces Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 to round out Group B play. See the full 2026 FIFA World Cup schedule here.
