Criminal Minds: Evolution is back in action for Season 19, and though Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) headed back to lockup in Season 18’s finale, he’s still a valuable asset to the BAU.

Per the Season 19 synopsis of Erica Messer’s hit Paramount+ series, “As the BAU investigates a string of chilling new cases, Elias Voit embarks on a path to atone for his past. His newfound infamy inadvertently awakens their most formidable nemesis yet, The Fan. Precise, calculating, and relentlessly dangerous, this UnSub pushes the BAU to the brink and back under the shadow of Elias Voit. But how far will The Fan go to prove his superiority over his idol?”

While we’ll have to tune in to see exactly what role Voit plays in solving this season’s major case, Decider’s exclusive Season 19, Episode 3 clip gives a sneak peek at Voit’s upcoming chat with Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), which she and Tyler Green (RJ Hatanaka) later watch back in the office.

The minute-long clip from Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 19, Episode 3, “Body Count,” shows Tara and Voit meeting in the library, where Voit dives deep into his traumatic childhood with his abusive uncle, Cyrus Lebrun (Silas Weir Mitchell).

“After your Uncle Cyrus was granted legal custody, after your parents passed away… How long was it before Cyrus started taking you along with him?” Tara asked. “You mean after I killed them?” Voit replied, continuing his quest for accountability.

Voit flashed back to his days under Uncle Cyrus’ supervision, when he was locked in a closet with a dead dog. “How long?” he replied. “Maybe a month. It didn’t take him long to break me, and then I was his son. His servant.”

When Tara asked if Cyrus ever used Voit to lure victims, he said no, explaining that he just wanted him to help get rid of the bodies. Voit thought back to their drives out to the woods in Durham County, where they strategically buried victims in an area with no road signs or mile markers. “He thought the sheriffs there were lazy and stupid,” Voit recalled, before telling Tara they buried about 15 or 20 victims.

While we don’t hear the rest of Tara and Voit’s discussion, we do see Tara and Tyler reviewing the interrogation footage later on in the office, which suggests Voit’s words and memories will once again carry some serious weight when it comes to cracking the case at hand.

Though Voit’s uncle was killed in Season 16, Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 18 creatively brought him back to haunt his nephew as he worked with the BAU to catch a different killer UnSub. So we’re eager to see what role Voit and his memories of Cyrus will play in Season 19.

Tune into Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 19, Episode 3 this Thursday, June 4 on Paramount+.
