Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Josh Simmons developed a reputation as a "freaky athletic" physical specimen at Ohio State.
He was a shoo-in to be a high first-round draft pick before he suffered a torn patellar tendon in October 2024. The injury caused him to slide in the 2025 NFL Draft and fall right into the Chiefs' lap at No. 32 overall.
Simmons justified all the hype as a rookie protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes last season, though he was limited to eight games. This offseason, he has doubled down on the physicality that got him here.
First, Simmons' physical transformation went viral when the Chiefs posted this May 23 photo showing him lifting weights. He looked particularly jacked in the photo, warranting a question about it during his media availability at the Chiefs' mandatory minicamp this week.
"It was kind of a side effect of just working out every day," Simmons said. When a reporter commented that he looked "more cut up," Simmons smiled and responded, "Tried to, man. Just trying to get stronger." He disclosed he's currently around 285 and 290 pounds and wants to be 300 pounds for Week 1.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also commented on Simmons' transformation during his media availability Thursday, saying, "He's kind of a unique character cause he's not a real big guy. That's not what he is. But he's extremely strong and very athletic. [...] I know he probably told you he's gonna put on weight. We'll see where that goes. I don't think that's an absolute that has to take place. But he looked pretty good out here."
Simmons abruptly left the Chiefs last October for an undisclosed personal matter and missed four games. He returned for the Chiefs' 22-19 loss in Denver on Nov. 16, but he suffered a season-ending dislocated and fractured wrist in a 31-28 loss in Dallas on Thanksgiving.
A healthy Simmons will be even more crucial to the Chiefs this upcoming season, as Mahomes is coming off of the most devastating injury of his decorated career — a torn ACL and LCL he suffered on Dec. 14.
