A Canadian former mommy blogger who was a married straight woman before becoming a transgender man just added yet another label to themselves — “two-spirit.”
Rowan Jette Knox — who previously described themselves as a “straight mother and wife,” “bisexual,” “pansexual,” “disabled AUDHD non-binary queer person,” “polyamorous lover to three trans-identified men” and “trans guy,” according to Quillette — announced the latest gender evolution in September.
Two-spirited is a term used by indigenous communities to describe people who have a masculine and feminine spirit.
Knox — who was previously married for around 30 years to a man named Mark, who also eventually transitioned and became “Zoe” — revealed they want to reconnect to what they described as their “lost culture.
“I finally felt ready to claim the two-spirit identity for myself,” wrote Knox, a co-owner of a Toronto coffee shop who dropped the news three years after coming out as a transgender man, on Threads.
“It’s a big step for me at 50 years old. I’ve been actively connecting with my lost culture (my Indigenous father left when I was a baby – intergenerational trauma played a big part), learning the stories, reading the history, and giving myself permission to belong,” said the author — a parent of four who was named one of 2020’s Most Influential Parents by the magazine Today’s Parent.
“So hello, my name is Rowan, and I am trans and two-spirit,” Knox said, before using an Indigenous greeting that translates as, “I am happy to see you.”
Knox, who previously lived as Amanda Knox, blamed the effects of colonialism for the delay in reconnecting with their heritage.
“It’s not my fault I didn’t grow up within my culture (I firmly blame colonialism and the intergenerational trauma it caused in my family) but it is my responsibility to lean in and learn the teachings now,” the author wrote.
“I wish I had done it sooner, but it’s never too late.”
Knox, a parent of four who was named one of 2020’s Most Influential Parents by the magazine Today’s Parent, announced that that they are two-spirited a year after undergoing a double mastectomy.
The milestone surgery came two years after announcing they would be transitioning.
“I’ve known this is who I am for a long time, but I had to work up the courage to say it out loud,” Knox wrote on X in 2023, according to Pink News.
“It took months of introspection, therapy, long chats with loved ones, plenty of tears and pushing through a lot of fear and denial to get here but am glad I’m here.”
Knox admitted “not living authentically” was a “heavy load to carry” – but said they now “[get] to live as Rowan forever.
“I don’t exactly know how that’s going to feel, but I can only imagine it will be a whole lot better than how I’ve been feeling up until now,” the author added.
Knox said they chose the name Rowan because “the rowan tree is known for its strength and protection in stories and legends around the world,” the Toronto Star reported.
Knox was married for around 30 years to hubby Mark before Mark also transitioned and became Zoe.
They separated but lived with their transgender partners in a four-person household but appear to have gone their separate ways as two couples. Knox now lives with Dani.
