Boxing star Edgar Berlanga, who famously fought Canelo Alvarez two years ago, was thrown behind bars this week after he allegedly whipped the mother of his child with a pistol.

The 29-year-old pugilist was accused of roughing up the woman on Oct. 18, while the two were driving down an interstate in Polk County, Fla.

Edgar Berlanga was hit with two criminal charges after he allegedly struck the mother of his child during a heated argument in Florida on Oct. 18.

A probable cause affidavit, obtained by the California Post on Wednesday, stated Berlanga “began hitting her with an open hand” after the two had gotten into an argument.

“He then retrieved a pistol from the cupholder and stuck her in the forehead with the magazine well of it,” authorities wrote in the probable cause affidavit. “She then attempted to exit the vehicle; however, Berlanga grabbed her by the left arm and attempted to pull her back in.”

The woman was eventually able to break free and ran toward a nearby 7-Eleven, where witnesses called for authorities on her behalf, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Officers arrived on the scene and allegedly “observed swelling and bruising” on the woman’s forehead, as well as a tear on her shirt sleeve in addition to “an apparent bruise on her left inner arm,” the probable cause affidavit stated.

Court records show a warrant for Berlanga’s arrest was issued on Oct. 23, and jail records show Berlanga turned himself in to authorities on Monday.

Berlanga, released from custody Tuesday, has been formally charged with one count of battery-touch or strike and one count of aggravated battery.

He’s due in court for arraignment on Nov. 17.

A message seeking comment from his attorney on Wednesday was not immediately returned.

Berlanga is a 24-2 fighter whose biggest match came on Sept. 14, 2024, when he took on Alvarez in Las Vegas.

He ended up losing the tilt via unanimous decision, though he’s since compiled a 2-1 record.
