Former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra secured a place in California’s November gubernatorial election after advancing from the state’s crowded top-two primary.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Becerra secured his advancement with 26.7 percent of the vote as of 8:06 p.m. ET Friday, with 1,681,230 votes. The news outlet called the race at 7:50 p.m.

Becerra, a Democrat and former California attorney general, gained momentum in his campaign by emphasizing his decades of public service experience and positioning himself as a proven counterweight to President Donald Trump. According to the AP, Becerra’s campaign focused heavily on affordability issues, housing costs and energy prices while highlighting his record of challenging Trump administration policies during his tenure as attorney general.

Where Hilton and Steyer Stand

Former Fox News host Steve Hilton has 26.4 percent of the vote, according to the AP Friday night, with 1,666,522 votes. This compares to Democrat Tom Steyer's 21 percent, with 1,328,712 votes. The outlet also notes that 67 percent of the votes have been counted in the race.

Hilton has received backing from Trump, who has landed key primary wins this election cycle.

It is immediately unclear who will win the primary race alongside Becerra, but only two can proceed to the general election.
