Fans of HBO‘s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms may not have just years, but decades to hang out with Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell). At least, that’s if showrunner Ira Parker gets his wish.
During a call this week with Parker to discuss the show’s chances this upcoming awards season, DECIDER asked him about how he saw A Knight of the Seven Kingdom evolving past the first three seasons. Even though George R.R. Martin has only published three novellas about Dunk and Egg, he’s also recently shared his notes and outlines for around a dozen future stories with Parker. Meaning, Parker has the material to tell Dunk and Egg’s full story if he so desires. Did Parker see a vision for the series that could grow along with its pint-sized star Dexter Sol Ansell?
“So I would say that’s the only way I would do it,” Parker said. “I mean, Dexter is our family, Dexter is our Egg.”
Parker then outlined his dream for the future of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George’s plans for the characters.
“What I would love to do: George has five stories of sort of Egg the boy, which is, I think, a nice thing to do right now while Dexter is still young and his voice is, you know, squeaky,” Parker said. “It will be cracking shortly and he’ll be growing up.”
“But we want to follow him for those five [stories]. Then at the end of that fifth one, he sort of becomes the prince again. Then, the next couple would take place in a different [setting]. Not just on the road, but in a place like Summerhall or a place like King’s Landing. That’s the middle section of if. Of course, the last [section] is Egg the king.”
In A Dance With Dragons, Martin reveals that Egg became King Aegon V when he was 33 years old. Dexter Sol Ansell is currently 11. So how would this work logistically? Parker has a plan.
“You know, everybody wants to go and do their own thing, and I hope Peter and Dexter have absolutely huge careers. I hope Dexter is the new Leonardo DiCaprio in the Titanic reboot and Peter Claffey should be James Bond,” Parker said. “I want them to go and have their careers and I would love to come back every now and then and just do one or two more in the middle of their lives.”
“But yeah, of course, it can’t be anyone else other than Dexter and it has to be Peter.”
Parker also shared that he thinks that this plan would add further depth to the story.
“The wonderful thing about this show is we don’t have the dead coming to kill mankind, you’re not aiming towards this big battle of humans versus the magical world,” he said. “But we have a life to show you between these two strangers who became friends, who became brothers, who became, I don’t know, something greater than that. You know, legends in a weird sort of way.”
“Anyways, that’s my goal. We’ll see. None of this has been discussed with HBO.” Better get on that!
