Some were surprised when quarterback Mac Jones made it known he wanted to stay with the San Francisco 49ers next season instead of being traded to another place where he could probably start (and make more money).
But 49ers tight end George Kittle wasn’t one of them.
During an appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Up & Adams” on Wednesday, Kittle gave a glowing review of Jones and his decision to stay in San Francisco knowing he would be relegated to Brock Purdy’s backup.

“He’s a juice guy, he’s got all the energy in the world, and he loves life,” Kittle said. “… There’s usually one or two guys that the team loves — it’s not usually a quarterback — but that’s Mac Jones. He goes everywhere with the boys. You invite him to do anything, he’s there.
“… He’s always down to hang out with the boys and just support [us], so when you have a quarterback like that, who also works his tail off, does everything he can to play at a high level for the guys, played last year and won four or five games for us — was the only reason we made the playoffs — so the fact that you have a guy like that, wants to stay and be on the team, and he’s a glue guy, I have nothing but green flags to say about Mac Jones. And he’s a 10 out of 10.”
It didn’t take long for what Kittle said about him to make his way back to Jones, who appreciated the complements and sent a message back his tight end’s way.
“Thanks Georgie. Send me your Venmo, I’ll get you that PR consultant retainer fee sent over shortly. 😂😂😂 #GlueGuy,” Jones responded on X.
Jones signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the 49ers last offseason to be Purdy’s backup. He started eight games in relief of Purdy, winning five of them while throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a career-high 97.4 passer rating.
Jones’ performance had everyone buzzing that he’d done enough to resurrect his career and earn a starting job somewhere else.
The 49ers even reportedly had trade offers for Jones (some analysts believed they could’ve got at least a second-round pick for him), but the former first-round pick wanted to stay put.
